Sarah Palin: Is She a Quitter? When Should YOU Throw in the Towel?
Love her or hate her, Palin continues to fire up commentators, enrage her critics and engage her supporters. When she jumped ship and resigned as the governor of Alaska, she shocked even her former Presidential running mate John McCain, who admitted on Meet the Press this week that she hadn’t called him beforehand.
While the pundits will continue to debate whether the constant media scrutiny forced Palin out of office or whether she’s plotting her own media empire, the question I have for you is what can you learn from her departure? If your job is driving you crazy, should you stay or should you go?
If you’ve read my book Stop Pissing Me Off! What to do When the People you Work with Drive you Crazy, about how you can mend most workplace situations, you know that I’m an optimist about most issues. It’s always a useful exercise to learn how to love the one you’re with. But….sometimes even the best of us have to fold our cards, pack up our tent, and move on.
How do you know if it’s your time? Take this test, answering yes or no for each item:
You honestly do not have a bad habit of leaving jobs at the first sign of difficulty or conflict.
You’ve diligently tried all the tricks in the book in order to improve your chances of loving your current job and managing the difficult people with whom you work.
You’re constantly miserable.
Your mental or physical health is suffering because of your job.
You’re being subjected to mental or physical abuse or harassment.
Your spouse, best friend, significant other, priest, and/or therapist is telling you that he or she can’t stand to hear about your crummy work situation one more time.
If the answer is yes to two or more of these questions, you need, as U2 advises, to “Walk On.”
